They have a strong connection, but they share comparatively less screen time together than they did in the series. And there is almost zero sexual tension between the two of them. For that matter, sexuality is almost completely banished from Rebuild, so far. Even the Misato/Kaji relationship is almost completely neuterd, sexuality wise.

Actually I didn't even mean Rebuild, just doujinshi overall: it's a shame more circles don't have much in the way of aforementioned pairings. :(

Though with the Rebuild series, I've personally started to take a "wait and see" approach instead of speculating on anything about it.
