i remember way back in the day when these pages were first coming out, someone made a really nice edit of it to make him look less anorexic. really subtle, but it was fantastic. anyone happen to still have that?

Care to take that back? Just because Ishida likes doing girly roles and is ridiculously good at voicing traps and lesbians doesn't mean that he can't do GAR. He's just That versatile.

GAR != alpha as fuck. Alpha as fuck is someone who can cultivate the image of being a masculine sex machine, whether he is one or not (again, like Misato, but male). For an idea: Roy Focker in Macross is alpha as fuck, while being GAR, too. It's more in the tone than anything else, really.
The example anon posted features flawless voice acting, as per usual for Ishida, but has the vocal timbre of Guybrush Threepwood with lung cancer.

You forget that he'd spend half his time at home drunk and babbling like a child, that's not very alpha. He'd only seem alpha as fuck when he does things like drop in to rescue and flirt with Shinji, that'd be over the moment he brings Shinji home, Kaji wouldn't help either. Plus Misato's supposed to be good looking and lolJapan's standards of beauty for guys look somewhat feminine, ergo his character design looks boyish when compared to the other cast his age, that's not very alpha either.
